לָעַג
לָעַג(b. h.; cmp. preced. wds) to jest, mock. Pesik. R. s. 34 לשוא לָעַגְנוּ עלוכ׳ in vain did we deride their words. Hif. הִלְעִיג same. Y.Peah I, 15d top (ref. to Prov. 30:17) עין שהִלְעִיגָה עלוכ׳ the eye that mocked at the law commanding to honor father and mother and despised the law (Deut. 22:6) Erub.21b (ref. to להג, Koh. 12:12) כל המַלְעִיג עלוכ׳ whosoever derides the words of the wise, v. לַעַג. Gen. R. s. 94 מַלְעִיגִים בשפתותיהן spoke lasciviously. Esth. R. to III, 9 מַלְעִיגִין אותנווכ׳ they deride us and our religion. Num. R. s. 16 הִלְעִיגוּ לי they spoke irreverently of me. Y.Naz.I, beg.51a (read:) מהו זה מַלְעִיג עליהן אווכ׳ how is this? Does he mean it sarcastically; or does he mean to say, I will be a Nazir like them? Yalk. Ex. 250 ורוה״ק מַלְעֶגֶת עליו and the Spirit of Holiness laughs at him; a. e.
